Yamaguchi Patent Office is located in Haccho-bori, a district famous for “Haccho-bori Doshin.”
The name of “Haccho-bori Doshin” originates from public dormitories which existed in the Edo period (early17th century to mid-19th century) and housed 300 police officers, referred to as Yoriki or Doshin, of the town magistrate’s office located in the Haccho-bori district.
The Yoriki and Doshin were government officials in charge of the public safety of Edo (modern-day Tokyo) acting as part of the police agency. They were very popular amongst the town’s people and were affectionately called “Haccho-bori-no-danna (Masters of Hacchobori).” Nearly four centuries later, Yoriki and Doshin continue to be favorably portrayed in a variety of novels, movies and TV series.Since our office is located in Haccho-bori, we would like to tell you about some clear-cut cases we have handled in the past as narratives of “Legends of Haccho-bori” – even though we are far from being as chic and stylish as the Masters of Hacchobori.
